With so many blockbuster movies hitting theaters this summer we always love to hear how indies make an impact. Last Day of Summer proves to be a film to be watched this summer. The folks at Cinematical and MovieFone share with us their thoughts on “movies to watch this summer.”
There’s little in the film world that reddens my blackened heart more than news of a small-time indie flick getting picked up for a theatrical run. Doesn’t matter if it’s for a 3,000+ screen run like Paranormal Activity or a one week run at two theaters in New York and LA, it just makes me smile to know there are distribution companies out there still willing to take a gamble on movies with very little public awareness. The latest independently produced title to break through the straight-to-video barrier isLast Day of Summer, a dark comedy from newcomer Vlad Yudin.
The film stars DJ Qualls as Joe, a fast-food employee pushed over the edge by a boss, William Sadler, that won’t stop tormenting him. So, on the last day of summer, Joe sets his plan for revenge in motion. However, things are quickly derailed when Stefanie (Nikki Reed) catches his eye, so Joe impulsively decides to kidnap her instead…
E1 Entertainment has released the film in September of 2010 and is now available on DVD, iTunes and On Demand with Amazon not announced an official release date for the film yet, though they have said it will be getting its limited theatrical run ahead of hitting DVD shelves this fall. You can check out a trailer for the film below, though note that E1 Ent will be keeping the Last Day of Summer title over the Held Captive title the trailer boasts. I actually think it looks pretty charming (despite the revenge fantasy setup), but I also have a soft spot for DJ Qualls, so I may just be glad to see him in a leading role.
